Healthcare in Cambodia –
Not Accessible to All

The public healthcare system in Cambodia is overburdened and under-resourced in many areas — particularly in the south of the country, where poverty, lack of infrastructure and a shortage of medical professionals severely limit access to healthcare. Many people, especially in rural areas, have no reliable access to medical care or live far from suitable facilities. The result: treatable illnesses remain untreated, emergencies often end tragically. Particularly at risk are children and pregnant women, for whom medical care can be vital — whether through vaccinations, preventive check-ups or safe childbirth.

Medical Care for Families
in Cambodia

The Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital in southern Cambodia is a non-profit hospital and training centre dedicated to high-quality medical care for children, pregnant women and families — regardless of their financial means. With the goal of sustainably improving healthcare in one of the poorest regions of the country, the hospital offers comprehensive medical care that saves lives and gives new hope.

The Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in a region spanning a coastline of 433 kilometres, specialising in the care of children and pregnant women – a vital resource for many families in dire need.

Life-Saving Infrastructure and International Standards

Thanks to its unique infrastructure and high technical standards on par with Western countries , the hospital enjoys an excellent reputation. The hospital grounds cover 70,000 m² with 28 functional buildings, including outpatient clinics, operating theatres, intensive care unit, maternity ward, neonatology and neonatal intensive care unit, as well as inpatient wards. Residential buildings for doctors and staff and a guesthouse for visiting international medical teams are further included. The high quality and modern facilities make the hospital a model of excellence throughout Southeast Asia.

Free Medical Care for the Poorest

Due to the hospital’s humanitarian focus, everyone receives access to medical care regardless of their income. Patients in need from impoverished segments of the population are treated free of charge or pay only minimal contributions. At the same time, patients who are better off financially contribute to the actual costs of examination, treatment and medication in accordance with their income.

The Treatment of Children is in the focus

Despite providing care for all age groups, the hospital’s focus is on paediatrics, neonatology and obstetrics – an important contribution to reducing infant mortality in Cambodia.

Training and Qualification of Cambodian Staff

A key priority is the long-term strengthening of the national healthcare system through the qualified training of medical staff in Cambodia. The hospital is therefore operated almost exclusively by Cambodian staff. In management and key medical positions, the Cambodian team is supported by experienced foreign experts, ensuring smooth knowledge transfer, intercultural equality and, as a result, a high level of motivation among all employees.

Young, Committed and Multidisciplinary Team

Thanks to the hospital’s comprehensive training and qualification concept, doctors and Cambodian nursing staff are employed soon after completing their training. Together with the experienced specialists, they form a dynamic and motivated team that currently consists of 260 employees.
